TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a flexible, rubber-like 3D printing filament designed for parts that need to bend, compress, or absorb impact without breaking. It combines the elasticity of rubber with the durability of engineering plastics, making it ideal for functional components and flexible prototypes.
Unlike rigid materials such as PLA or ABS, TPU prints produce parts that can stretch and flex repeatedly while returning to their original shape. It also offers excellent abrasion resistance, strong layer adhesion, and long-term durability under repeated stress.
Whether you are printing protective covers, vibration dampers, or wearable parts, TPU delivers the strength and flexibility needed for real-world applications.
Key Features
- Flexible and Durable – Parts bend and compress without cracking, combining elasticity with strong tensile strength.
- Excellent Impact Resistance – Ideal for shock-absorbing components such as protective bumpers and mounts.
- Abrasion Resistant – Handles repeated friction and mechanical movement better than many standard filaments.
- Chemical Resistance – Resistant to oils, greases, and many common chemicals.
- Rubber-Like Surface Finish – Smooth, slightly rubbery feel with excellent layer bonding.
Typical Applications
- Phone cases and protective covers
- Seals, gaskets, and washers
- RC tyres and shock absorbers
- Vibration dampers and mounts
- Wearable items and straps
- Tool grips and handles
- Robotics and flexible mechanical components
Printing Guidelines
- Nozzle Temperature: 190–250°C
- Bed Temperature: 30–60°C
- Print Speed: 20–35 mm/s
- Cooling: Low to moderate
- Extruder: Direct drive recommended
Flexible filaments typically print slower than rigid materials, but produce highly durable and flexible parts.
Ideal for makers who need flexible, durable prints instead of brittle plastic parts.
Can be a challenge to print on machines not optimised for TPU, but bed adhesion will be strong. Consider using 3Dlac as a separation layer to ease removal.
Extrusion molding grade; with special UV stabilizers; very good hydrolysis and microbial resistance.
Good low-temperature flexibility

More Information
- Will spiderweb, so choose model well.
- Turn filament fan off during early layers, then print like you would PLA.
- We recommend raising the print temp. slightly compared to regular PLA and reduce the print speed to around 40mm/s to help the filament to just fall out of the nozzle rather than be pushed by the feeder
- Melting Point 190-250 °C
Material - TPU (Thermo Plastic Urethane) by Covestro (formerly Bayer industrial Science)
Diameter: 1.75mm (+/- 0.04mm)
Weight: Aprox. 600g of filament, plus spool and box
Melting Point: 190-250 °C - Best on Inventor2SE at 220°
Abrasive: No
Build Surface: Buildtak, glass (recommend hairspray or 3D Lac. Cold bed great.
Source Material Properties(Manufacturers Figures) - When printed, values will depend on your printer and settings

We have printed a lot with this material on the Flashforge Dreamer. Settings and info you may find helpful:
Bed Temp: We heat the bed to 50 degrees, unless twin extruding with ABS see below.
Resolution : 200 - 300 micron
Print Speed: 30 mm/second
Temperature: 230 degrees
Nozzle fan: ON (we use the left extruder on the dreamer and tell the default it is PLA so this turns on.
Two Materials: We have printed Flex-PLA and Flex-ABS Both stick/fuse well together. In both cases we use the plastic as the raft. With ABS we raise the bed temp to 110, however also found the higher heat did effect print quality of the flex (perhaps as the filament fan is also turned off).
General Note: Flex is very susceptible to stringy webs between walls (called spider webbing). Reducing temperature defiantly helps, as does slowing print speed. It is interesting that in the heated chamber of ABS printing this is much less, but the quality of the overall flex print is also more poor.
