Kinboshi: FFF + SLS, The World’s First Raise3D RMS220 SLS Printer Was Successfully Installed

Kinboshi, is a Japanese manufacturing company established in August 1948. Kinboshi specializes in planning and sales of clothing, equipment, devices, and materials related to security and safety, as well as creating and providing healthy spaces through products for hospitals and elderly care facilities, and industrial equipment and facilities aimed at energy and resource conservation. Currently, the company has approximately 190 employees and a registered capital of 10 million yen. The President and CEO of Kinboshi is Mr. Kazufumi Ishii.

As early as 2021, Kinboshi introduced multiple FFF 3D printers-Raise3D Pro2. With its low cost, multi-material adaptability, and long-term stability, Pro2 quickly became a core tool for prototype verification and product development. The Raise3D Pro2 printer not only saved Kinboshi significant R&D time and costs but also helped it deploy three “R&D-production” sites in Japan, enabling same-day production and delivery for parts ordering. The advantages of FFF technology were fully demonstrated at this stage:

Introduction

Kinboshi has completed a key upgrade from FFF to SLS in the process of of applying additive manufacturing technology. Over the past 8 years, Kinboshi has relied on the Raise3D Pro2 FFF printer to achieve rapid prototyping and small-batch trial production, significantly improving product design freedom and iteration efficiency.

In October 2025, Kinboshi became Raise3D’s first overseas customer to successfully install the RMS220 SLS 3D printer. From then on, Kinboshi was able to better integrate FFF and SLS 3D printing technologies, enabling faster and more flexible product development.

Limitations of FFF and SLS technologies

However, FFF technology still has significant limitations. For example, the interlayer bonding force in the Z-axis direction is weak, making the printed parts prone to cracking under vertical stress; the support structure is difficult to remove, limiting design freedom; and the model lacks sufficient detail accuracy. These problems are particularly prominent in final products involving pressure, load, or long-term operation. These are issues that cannot be avoided when using FFF technology.

To compensate for the shortcomings of FFF technology, Kinboshi had long been using powder bed fusion (PBF) printers from other brands. Mr. Hiroshi Iida, Director of Maebashi Office / Development Department Manager, commented, ” Although powder printers are very robust and durable, they are not suitable for small-volume production due to the cost required for each molding cycle.”

Seeking the Best Cost-Effectiveness – The Introduction of the RMS220

The company already worked with Raise3D Pro2 FFF printers, which were suitable for fit, size, and shape checks, but these lacked the capability for functional testing. To address this, HellermannTyton sought out a resin printing solution that could reliably produce strong, flexible parts with a high level of detail. This would allow them to quickly iterate designs and provide their customers with functional prototypes within one or two days.

Faced with this dilemma, Kinboshi clearly stated its needs: low anisotropy in printed models, while simultaneously lower printing costs.

The Raise3D RMS220 fills this gap, combining the advantages of both. It employs SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) technology, possessing the core advantages of SLS technology: high strength, high density, and good isotropy; suitable for medium-batch continuous production with lower maintenance costs.

The core advantages of the RMS220 also include: In April 2025, Kinboshi’s President and CEO Kazufumi Ishii personally visited Raise3D and was deeply impressed by the RMS220. Kinboshi also appreciated the service attitude and dedication of Raise3D’s Japanese distributor, Japan 3D Printer, which spurred their decision.

“My first honest impression was that it looked cool. I can expect the finished product to live up to that cool image, and perhaps this is especially true since I visited the manufacturer, but I was also able to confirm the manufacturer’s development attitude, so in that sense, I think it would be best to adopt it as a reflection of the product itself as well as the manufacturer’s attitude, with future expectations in mind.” — 石井 一史, President and CEO

Choosing RMS220: From Doubt to Decision

Kinboshi did not rush into purchasing the RMS220 simply because of its conceptual advantages. Instead, they conducted rigorous practical performance tests. They printed a large, warp-prone part to evaluate dimensional accuracy and deformation control. They also conducted several functional tests, such as drop and hydrostatic tests: the part was dropped from its actual height without breaking; a 3mm thick pipe part successfully withstood 1 MPa pressure without leakage. These excellent test results ultimately led Kinboshi to choose the RMS220.

FFF+SLS:The Key to Seamless Transition

In October 2025, Kinboshi, as the first customers worldwide, successfully installed the Raise3D RMS220 printer with the assistance of Japan 3D Printer, the Japanese distributor of Raise3D.

The success of a technology upgrade depends not only on equipment performance but also on its integration with existing workflows. Kinboshi’s core consideration is compatibility between FFF and SLS printers; Raise3D’s slicing software ideaMaker and cloud management platform RaiseCloud are compatible with the RMS220. Document management, queue scheduling, and status monitoring functions are all unified on a single platform.

Kinboshi employees can use the Pro2 and RMS220 without any training. The Pro2 will be used for prototyping, small-batch pilot production, and other low-cost manufacturing using different materials. The RMS220, on the other hand, is suitable for medium-scale production, combining strength and flexibility. Therefore, Kinboshi is committed to finding the best way for customers to utilize these 3D printers and achieve a balanced development of them.

Kinboshi’s experience shows that FFF and SLS technologies can complement each other, enriching additive manufacturing pathways. For companies hesitant to use 3D printers to produce marketable end products, Kinboshi’s President and CEO points out that speed is crucial for expanding new businesses and developing innovative products, therefore, the advantages of 3D printing should be fully utilized.

CEO of Kinboshi said: “Many companies without their own production lines hesitate to enter the 3D printing field, but I believe that with 3D printers, many steps can be completed internally. Therefore, as a first step, in-house production of end products may be the most advanced technology currently available, but I believe we can quickly establish such a system.”
